Designed to save your natural teeth, endodontics is a part of dentistry that is limited to the roots of the teeth. The roots of teeth have living soft tissue, within the center, that contains blood vessels and nerve endings.
When you have a cavity that gets close to the nerve space, you may experience lingering hot or cold sensitivity, spontaneous pain, or sleepless nights. In this case, the living tissue is very swollen and will not heal.
With a root canal procedure, the swollen tissue is removed and the pain begins to subside. Often times a crown is needed following a root canal.
